Obituary

Bettye June Meek, 71, of Poteau, OK, passed away June 24, 2011, in Ft. Smith, AR. She was born June 27, 1939, in Spiro, OK, to William H. and Martha Louvenia (McCool) Gillion. She married James D. Meek August 6, 1964 in Fort Smith, AR. She was a homemaker.
June was a member of The American Legion for 42 years. She held every office and chairmanship in her District and The Department, going on to be Department President 1995-96 and than to National Southern Division Vice-President. During all her work with the Auxiliary her great love was the Oklahoma Girls State program. She first attended in 1979 in the newspaper staff and then into the office. She was on the National Girls Nation Staff for two years. In many years at Girls State she only misses two years until her illness forced her to step down in 2009, but still helping all she could on the phone, and was always there to help with answers to questions and advice to help make the next year a great Girls State. June was very dedicated American Legion Auxiliary Member and Devoted to the Girls Sate program. She will be missed all over the State by all that knew her.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother Bill Gillion.
She is survived by her son Jeff Meek and wife Angela of Shady Point; two grandchildren Ty and Colt Sanders of Shady Point; one great grandchild Baley Sanders of Sallisaw; two brothers Jay Gillion and wife Pat of Sumter, South Carolina and Bob Gillion and wife Jackie of Cardwell, MO; a sister Mary Converse of Milburn; as well as numerous other family members, friends, and loved ones.
Pallbearers will be Ty Sanders, Colt Sanders, Roger Meek Jr. and David Green.
Service will be held at 10:00AM, Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at Grace Manor Memorial Chapel, Poteau, OK, with Bro. Charley Cabaniss officiating. Interment will follow service at the Old Bokoshe Cemetery, Bokoshe, OK. The family will visit with friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Monday evening at the funeral home.
