Obituary

John Sibley Stokes of Fort Smith, Arkansas was born September 25th 1934 in Fort Smith, Arkansas to John and Nellie (Corl) Stokes and passed away January 6, 2021 in Fort Smith, Arkansas at the age of 86.
John was a Korean war veteran who retired after 35 years as a millwright superintendent and spent much of his retirement as an ordained mister spreading the word of GOD and performing numerous weddings and funerals. He was also honored to have served as a member of the Hartford Masonic Lodge #609 for over 50 yrs.
As a younger man John was known not only for his fiery temper and love of pinball but more so for his incredible work ethic and the fact that he never passed a person in need without trying to help. Many times he gave to those less fortunate when he didn't have it to give. He loved his wife Ginger fiercely and unconditionally and as an older man developed a sweet, uncomplaining and loving disposition which touched all those he came into contact with. He was a favorite of the staff at Brookdale Assisted living who took such good care of him and were always patiently amused by his 'snake catching' stories. The more he became dependent on his family the more he was vocal in his love, affection and thankfulness to them and never said goodbye without also saying "I Love You".
He is survived by his sons, Gallen (DeAnn) Stokes of Greenwood, and Billy (Jenny) Stokes of Ft Smith; a daughter Johanna (Rick) Massengale of Harrison; 13 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and loved ones.
John was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Ginger Stokes; parents, John and Nellie Stokes; a son Johnny Stokes and a daughter Sherri Stokes; brothers, Homer Stokes, Benny Stokes, Everett Stokes, and Chuck Stokes; a sister, Mary Stokes.
Johns family will hold a graveside memorial service at Hartford Cemetery at 2:30 PM Friday January 8th. Cremation is under the direction of Grace Funeral Service of Poteau, Oklahoma.
