Obituary

Joe S. Silva
1927-2018
On March 7, 2018, another member of The Greatest Generation, Joe S. Silva, 90, passed away, surrounded by members of his family, and his friends at his bedside in Poteau, Oklahoma.
Joe was born on September 7, 1927 in Flagstaff, Arizona. In 1930, Joe and his mother, Julia Silva, relocated to Los Angeles. Later Joe served in the U.S. Army and in 1947 he married his high school sweetheart, Geraldine Jerry Salazar. For many years Joe was part owner of a stationary business in Los Angeles and dedicated many years to coaching little league baseball.
In 2003, Joe and Jerry relocated to Bokoshe to be near to their sons, Johnny, and Joseph Silva. Several years ago Johnny and Joseph passed away. Jerry passed away in 2011; she and Joe had been married for 64 years.
Although Joe never received a formal education, he was well-read on a variety of topics. He enjoyed the Arts, especially Egyptian Archaeology. Joe was at his happiest when surrounded by family, and friends, having a beer, talking about sports, especially the Dodgers, politics, history, music, and the movies. Joe and Jerry were excellent dancers and could hold their own on any dance floor.
Joe will be missed by his many friends; his daughter, Christina Verdugo, of San Diego, California; his sister Sophia Hernandez of Montebello, California; his nephews, several grandchildren, and his friends at The Immaculate Conception Parish in Poteau where he was a member.
