Wilton Elmer Lamb
Wilton Lamb, 92 and a half, was known as Bill or Grandpa Billy. He was born in Perquirmaus County, North Carolina on July 31, 1925. His parents were James Elmer Lamb and Isabella (Ibbie) Elizabeth (Dail) Lamb. He went through the tenth grade before he enlisted in the Marine Corp in 1943. He participated in operations against enemy forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Island, Peleliu, and Palau Islands during World War II. He met Verna Belle Ward on October 29, 1945 in Oakland, California. They were married two weeks later November 11, 1945 in Reno, Nevada, the day after his discharge from the marines. They left California for North Carolina and lived with his parents for ten months before returning to California. They made their home in Hayward, California and had two daughters and a son. They were baptized and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1959. He started working with the Boy Scouts when he was 35 and held most of the leadership positions at various times. He stayed very active in other callings in the church Priesthood, Genealogy Chairman, Stake High Council, Councilor on Bishopric, High Priest Leader, Sunday School Secretary and Bishops Secretary, to name a few. In 1985 they retired and moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma to be closer to their daughter, son-in-law and four grandchildren. They continued staying active in Muskogee Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints until Verna died in 1996, after fifty years of marriage. His hobbies included fishing and gardening.
He married Nellie Wangler Ziebert in 1997 and went on a year and a half mission with Nellie to Salt Lake City working in the Genealogy Library. They returned to live in Muskogee until 2006 when they moved to Marion, Indiana to be closer to her family. Nellie passed away in 2014 and Bill moved to Bokoshe, Oklahoma to live with his daughter Verna and son-in-law, Randy Doughty.
Wilton is survived by his daughter Verna and son-in-law Randy Doughty of Bokoshe, OK, five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, six step children and their families, as well as a host of other family, friends and loved ones.
He is preceded in death by the mother of his children Verna Belle (Ward) Lamb, his second wife Nellie Wangler Ziebret Lamb, a daughter Elizabeth Mable Ramos, a son James Estel Lamb and a stillborn infant son, two sisters, Sybil Perry and a baby girl, three brothers, Herman Lamb, Melvin Lamb and Edward Lamb,
Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 20, 2018, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Poteau, OK. Interment will follow service at 2:00 p.m. at Fort Gibson National Cemetery, Fort Gibson, OK. Donations can be made to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Poteau Branch for Disabled American Veterans. Arrangements are under the direction of Grace Manor Funeral Home, Poteau, OK.
